Summer is here

Summer is here and what better way to add a splash of fun and colour to your summer wardrobe than these lovely cross-body bags.
These bags are ideal for those days you just don't feel like lugging EVERYTHING with you.

Tapestry Bags

A friend who recently visited Vietnam brought back a handful of gorgeous woven bags.
After much contemplation I decided to cut them up and used the woven designs on the front exterior pockets of these bags. The tapestry designs add a unique splash off fun to a very functional bag.

These stunning limited edition bags are made from a beautiful Gemsbok (Oryx) leather and featuring colourful woven tapestries on the front pockets.
This bag is unlined, has an inside leather zip pouch for storing valuables and will easily fit an A4 folder.
Bottom is reinforced with  removable reinforcement for added strength. Bag closes with a top zip.

Introducing Maya

The fringe detail is full-on bohemian glamour while the design is influenced by both Aztec and African design. Definitely for the girl who is a complete free-spirit, always on the go & has effortless style. What I love most about this bag is that it’s unique, one of a kind piece & that not everybody has one.

Garden and Home Expo

After weeks of preparation and building up stock, the Home Grown Expo in Durban is finally over and what a huge success! Thanks to all for the support. A grueling 10days with a 12hour stretch is not recommended!!. I was fortunate enough to be situated next to the ladies from Miracle Touch who kindly sneaked in a few complementary massages when we weren’t busy. I may have over exaggerated the pain in my back a tad...

The expo was bustling with tones to see and I would definitely recommend you pop in next year.

Thoughts on Obsolescence

As we enter the second half of the year, I can’t help but feel astounded at the sheer speed with which the first half went by! Compounded with deadlines and technological complications, suddenly it’s as if there aren’t enough hours in a day!

While acquainting myself better with the concepts of organisation and time management, I think about the work that goes into creating something beautiful,  and then how utterly astonished I am at the buying habits of consumers today. Working with a durable and natural material like leather, I wonder how it is that synthetic or plastic materials have come to play such a big part in our daily usage. For instance, while sitting at my stall in the market on Saturday, I observed the popularity of my neighbour’s product. By the end of the day, she was sold out. What’s intriguing about this, is that she was selling plastic handbags.  Intriguing because in my opinion a plastic handbag has the shelf life of a tomato – shiny and perfect when picked, but quick to spoil or perish with age. Sure it’s cheap, but what’s the point if it doesn’t last past next month? There’s a term for this, it’s called planned obsolescence, and this practice of planned obsolescence has a very significant impact on both our environment and our finances.

Basically, planned obsolescence is a financial strategy used to make a product which will require replacement on a sort of time schedule, so that companies benefit by creating something consumers will need to replace with a perceived newer and better version, or because it simply just didn't last. Not just damaging to our planet, as buying or consuming things that need constant replacement, usually end up in waste dumps, but also onerous on our wallets because replacing worn out or broken products is costly.  Now i’m not suggesting that the women selling plastic handbags has concocted some malicious plan to swindle money from you, I’m merely pointing out we don’t think twice about purchasing plastics. Instead of seeking instant gratification, we need to look beyond. Sure forking out a lump of cash for what appears to be an expensive product, may seem painful now, but when you’re still using that same product years from, wasn’t it worth it?! Furthermore, unlike synthetic goods which deteriorate or break with age, leather actually improves as it matures!

Ironically, it’s the longevity of leather bags that isn’t always so good for business. Paradoxically this is a good thing, guess we’ll just have to keep converting people from plastic to leather!

Cassette

I received a custom ordered bag  for a friends surprise birthday. We wanted something funky and chose to incorporate one of my earlier designs I used on a crosss-body pouch . This bag is really playful and has a lovely retro feel to it.
It's made from a beautiful chocolate brown buffalo leather.

Leather pouches

I've become increasingly aware of just how much leather is discarded daily in the footwear, automobile and furniture industry. I managed to get a few bags full of colourful leather that will be perfect for my bags!
I've used these off-cuts in the designs of my leather pouches. Approximately 17x 11cm, these pouches are ideal for organising and storing cell phones; make-up; cards and money...

Sample bags

I was recently asked to make up some samples of my 100% hand stitched bags for a customer with an on line shop. Here are a few pictures of some of the bags. Hand stitching is very labour intensive but  time honoured methods produce time honoured products.

New template

I changed the template for my Aiyana bag from last year to a slightly more square template. Still not sure which template I prefer, though the colour choices seems to work well.

The sun was out and couldn't resist a break:) Perfection!
